Part two is on. Sometime in the past the Explora hotels caught our eyes, especially El Chaltén and Rapa Nui. Tossed about but never executed on. The Boeing 787 changed things, now we could get from SFO to Papeete then go on to Rapa Nui and Chile. It became too much for us to ignore.
As with most South Pacific flights the departure was in the wee hours of the morning, scheduled more for the ultimate arrival than the origin departure. Our flight departed at 4:00am which meant a 2:00am airport arrival. South Pacific Airports are geared to this and PPT was a lively place at 3am.
How anyone found this place in the first place is beyond me.
Exhausted as we were we could not skip exploring the island at the first opportunity. Our guide took us to Akahanga, which according to tradition is the burial place of the first king of the island, ariki Hotu Matu’a. Lots of tradition to see here including how locals lived. The Explora guide was full of information which I will put out in the next few blogs. However I have been up for a whileeeee…….. zzzzzzzzzz
Hey I have internet in one of the most isolated places in the world. How cool is that!
